Flagging, informally known as the Hanky Code, is a color-coded system used in both the gay and BDSM communities. It involves wearing colored handkerchiefs to signify particular sexual kinks or interests.
A handkerchief worn on the left indicates a top (active role), while one worn on the right signals a bottom (passive role).
This practice, generally believed to have originated in the USA in the 1970s, gained popularity in gay nightlife, allowing individuals to subtly express their sexual preferences while socializing, and has since become a common tradition within the fetish community.
